1552
The first Finnish settlers came from Savo to Lake Oulujärvi area.
The area was a part of

OULUJÄRVEN PITÄJÄ,
The first church was built in Manamansalo island in the middle of Lake Oulujärvi.
1578
The first church was burned by the Karelians
in the 25-years War between Sweden and Russia.
The local name of this warfare was “rappasota”
in Finnish.
1585
OULUJÄRVEN PITÄJÄ was part of Liminka parish
after the war.

1599
PALTAMO (KAJAANIN PITÄJÄ) was separated once again from Liminka (Northern Ostrobothnia).
The second church was built in Paltaniemi.
1626
The second church was destroyed in an earthquake.
1647
PALTAMO was divided into two parts: PALTAMO and SOTKAMO. Kuhmo was a part of Sotkamo parish.
1651
KAJAANI was separated from Paltamo because Count Per Brahe gave town rights for Kajaani.
1664
The third church of Paltamo
parish was built in Paltaniemi
1716
The third church was burned by the Karelian
and the Russians during the Great Wrath.
1726
The fourth church of Paltamo parish was built in Paltaniemi.
1781
A new chapel was built in Säräisniemi.
1786
HYRYNSALMI was separated from Paltamo. A new church was built in Hyrynsalmi.
After that
PALTAMO had these four districts:
Paltamo,
Säräisniemi (chapel
since 1783), Vuolijoki, Kajaani
rural district.
HYRYNSALMI had these four districts: Hyrynsalmi, Ristijärvi (chapel since 1805), Suomussalmi
(chapel since 1764), Puolanka
(chapel since 1788).
1856
SUOMUSSALMI was separated from Hyrynsalmi.
1863
PUOLANKA was separated from Hyrynsalmi.
KUHMO was separated from Sotkamo.
1864
SÄRÄISNIEMI was separated from Paltamo. Vuolijoki was a part of Säräisniemi
at that time.
PALTAMO had these two districts: Paltamo and Kajaani rural district.
1897
KAJAANIN KAUPUNKI- JA MAASEURAKUNTA (Kajaani town and rural district) parish was founded.
1907
VUOLIJOKI was founded as an independent parish from Kajaani
and Säräisniemi.
1923
RISTIJÄRVI was separated from Hyrynsalmi. Ristijärvi had been a chapel parish of Hyrynsalmi
since 1805.
1946
The fifth church of Paltamo
parish was built in Kiehimä village on the
northern shores of
