CJCL Toronto ON 590 QSL-card signed by Chief Engineer. CJCL “Toronto’s Sports Radio The Fan 590” is part of the Rogers Broadcasting Limited.

WCNZ Marco Island FL 1660 email 2 hours for a follow-up report. The station will not be leaving the AM band nor will it move from 1660 kHz. However, the station will soon be sold. Relevant Radio can be heard on their website.

 

CHWO Toronto ON 740

QSL-card and station information 3 weeks via Ontario DX Association, 155 Main Street North, Apt. 313, Newmarket, Ontario, L3Y 8C2, Canada.

CHWO began broadcasting from Oakville, Ontario on 1250 kHz in 1956. In 2000 CHWO moved to 740 kHz after CBC Radio One, Toronto left AM band and this frequency. To January 2006 over 350 reception reports have arrived from various countries like Finland, Belgium, Jamaica, Canada and the U.S.A.

Today CHWO AM 740 is “All Time Favourites Radio”.

 

 

CHSM Steinbach MB 1250 letter 2 weeks from the engineering department of the Golden West Broadcasting Limited, Altona.

Golden West Radio own and operates 27 AM/FM stations located across the Canadian prairies and has head office in Altona, Manitoba.

CHSM 1250 AM is located near St. Pierre SSE of Winnipeg. CHSM gave me the 200th North American point in the FDXA rank.

 

WHIO Dayton OH 1290 email 2 weeks. WHIO is the original station of the Cox Radio group having signed on the air in 1935.

They operate with 5000 watts of power day and night, though at night the signal is directional.

 

Radio 4VEH Cap Haitien, Haiti 840 nice email 2 weeks. The Evangelistic Voice of Haiti has been on the air since 1950.

This station was heard during my local DX-pedition with SSS in Muhos near Oulu in November 2007.

WSCR Chicago IL 670 short email from “The Score 670” sports station. This station was heard during my DX pedition in Kivesvaara Hill, Paltamo. Later I got a nice letter in 3 weeks from Chief Engineer. WSCR used to be WMAQ from 1922 to 2000.

Radio Nacional de Venezuela, Barcelona/Guri 1310 QSL-card, letter, post card, CD containing “Ensemble Musical RNV”, brochures of the “proceso revolucionario de la Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela”. The friendly package came by FedEx from RNV Departamento Internacional in 7 months.

 

Voice of Han Broadcasting Network, Kuanyin, Taiwan 9745 card schedule 3 years!

This Taiwanese station was a big surprise to me as I had forgotten this report. No follow-up was sent to them. The QSL-card has both English and Chinese texts.

CFMJ Toronto ON 640 letter for follow-up report from station engineer. “AM 640 Toronto radio” is broadcasting from Beamsville (on the southern shore of Lake Ontario) with 50,000 watts. The station is focused on local news, talk and sports including the Toronto Maple Leafs plays. In the past the station was called as CFGM in Richmond Hill on 1320 kHz. The transmitting location is being moved 45 kilometers south of the former site. That actually makes CFMJ different radio station than CFGM was in the 1980’s. I heard CFGM in 1987 and CFMJ in 2006.

 

VOWR St.John’s, NL 800 certificate from Station Manager. VOWR began operations in 1924 with a 100 watts transmitter. It now operates with 10 kW. The station is owned by Wesley United Church. I heard this Canadian station last November when it was broadcasting annual fund raising radio auction. St.John’s is the site used by Guglielmo Marconi to receive the first trans-Atlantic wireless signal on December 12th, 1901.

 

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire 1026 letter, sticker and presenter photos 1 week after a follow-up report, the international postal system lost their first QSL somehow

WLAA Winter Garden FL 1680, “La Que Buena 1680 AM” replied with a Spanish language letter in 1 month from Ocoee.

 

Tianjin People’s Broadcasting Station 1386 email and QSL-card from Beijing although the report was also sent to Tianjin 

 

WRIG Schofield WI 1390 email for follow-up report, this station was heard in Muhos in November 2006. The frequency of 1390 kHz was a difficult one because of the interference coming from other US stations.

 

KCNZ Cedar Falls IA 1650 a really friendly QSL letter in 1 month from this sports station, KCNZ gave me the 1200th FDXA-ranking point (without FM stations).

 

 

Radio Star Country 981 letter and two stickers in 3 weeks from Northern Ireland.

Radio Star Country has live DJ shows from 8 am to 12 pm midnight, then continuous music in the night time.

 

CKEC New Glasgow NS 1320 first email for follow-up report, then snailmail with CD full of their broadcast from the day I was listening to them. CKEC was established already in 1953. At that time the station was broadcasting on 1270 kHz. Six years later CKEC moved to 1320 kHz. CKEC is planning to move to the FM band within 6 to 12 months. In Nova Scotia there are only three AM stations left. So many Canadian stations are changing AM for FM.

 

VMW Wiluna WA 6230 email came from Bureau of Meteorology, P.O.Box 1370, West Perth WA 6872, Australia. This Australian utility station was a big surprise in the 48 mb during the Muhos pedition in January. VMW is a weather service station for Western Australia. The sister station VMC is located in Cloncurry, Queensland. Later came a letter from the HQ of the Bureau of Meteorology.

WDCD Albany NY 1540 a personal email 1 week from Crawford Broadcasting Company. WDCD tower is 50 kW pointed east north-east which makes listening sometimes possible also in Finland. The sister station, Albany’s Christian Music Station WPTR is broadcasting on 96.7 FM. Later came snailmail letter with signature and coverage map of the station.

 

CKPC Brantford ON 1380 nice letter 1 month from Chief Engineer. The station was founded in Preston Ontario in 1923 and moved to Brantford ten years later. The town of Brantford is the hometown of the greatest NHL hockey player Wayne Gretzky. I heard CKPC and CKLC together on 1380 AM in Kivesvaara, Paltamo in January 2006. The CKLC v/s advised me to send a report also to CKPC which was relaying “Lite 92.1 FM” on AM band.

WTMJ Milwaukee WI 620 letter and great T-shirt after follow-up

This “Newsradio 620” was heard during KIVES5 pedition on January 12th 2006. WTMJ is the flagship station for three professional sports teams: the Milwaukee Bucks (basketball), Milwaukee Brewers (baseball) and Green Bay Packers (football). WTMJ was my 100th verified radio station from the U.S.A.

A relative of mine John visited the station and gave my report to WTMJ staff. Thanks a lot John!

KBOI was heard during KIVES5 pedition in Kivesvaara, Paltamo in January 2006. Tack så mycket Christer!

CHKT Toronto ON 1430 email schedule fup 1 week v/s Program Manager

Fairchild Radio Toronto is broadcasting weekdays mainly in Asian languages, Mandarin, Tamil, Korean, Punjabi, Hindi and Afghan. On Saturdays and Sundays CHKT has programs also in Vietnamese, Macedonian, Pilipino, Irish, Thai, Cambodian, Laotian, Romanian, Bosnian and Russian. The only English language hour is on Sundays at 10-11 pm EST (0300-0400 UTC). I heard their Cantonese program which starts every weekday at 11 pm EST (0400 UTC).

CKLC Kingston ON 1380 email fup v/s Program Director, this Canadian station was heard already during KIVES5 pedition in January. Sometimes it was difficult to separate CKLC and CKPC as they both broadcast on the same frequency and there is only one letter difference. CKPC was programming “FM 92.1” and CKLC gave IDs “Chum Radio for Kingston”.

FDXA The Station of the Year 2004 Pirate Radio 603 AM finally replied by Mike Spenser from London and by Roy Sandgren from Malmö.

This great radio station located in the Finnish Åland Islands provided lots of golden memories back in the offshore radio times.

Pirate Radio 603 AM will always be part of the Finnish radio history. Mike Spenser is very grateful for the title “the station of the year”.

Roy Sandgren is even planning to return back to the airwaves in the near future.
