KALLE JAAKKO ROMPPAINEN

Update 2009-10-14

Thank you for all the information about Kalle Jaakko Romppainen (1882 - 1905).

I did receive several e-mails from the USA. The mystery of Kalle is being solved.

However, the mystery of his brother Antti Edvard Romppainen (1884 -) remains unsolved.

Kalle Jaakko Romppainen (born on 22nd August 1882 in Hyrynsalmi, the province of Oulu in Finland) travelled to the USA in 1901 because of the illegal enrolment for the Russian army. He did not want to join the Russian armed forces. Kalle bought a ticket of 305 Finnish marks and travelled from Hanko by M/S Acturus to England. Arcturus left Finland in 1901. Kalle Jaakko Romppainen sailed on S/S Cymric from Liverpool on 18th October 1901. His destination was Hancock, Michigan. Kalle Jaakko Romppainen lived with his uncle Kalle Tolonen (born 28th January 1855 in Hyrynsalmi) in Hancock for sometime.

All tips about Tolonens and Romppainens living in Hancock would be very interesting. Kalle Jaakko Romppainen worked for a copper mine in Houghton County, Michigan. Kalle Jaakko died in a mine accident on 18th June 1905. He was buried at the Atlantic Cemetery.

Kalle’s younger brother Antti Edvard Romppainen (born 1st September 1884 in Hyrynsalmi) went to USA on 10th May 1904. Nobody knows what happened to him either. Probably both of them were died in the USA. In the beginning of the century Kalle Jaakko Romppainen sent a post card from Negaunee to Finland. So, he may have lived close to Marquette too? Kalle moved to USA by the same ship that was carrying some other relatives of mine too. Kalle’s second cousin Kalle Jaakko Romppainen (borned 1880 in Ristijärvi) and his wife Tilda Kemppainen were travelling to USA on the same ship. They went to Hancock too. They returned back to Finland in the 1910’s but their older children were all born in the USA.

Total of 38 Romppainens moved to the USA and Canada between 1892 and 1913.

Their descendents live mainly in these four areas:

1) Great Lakes: Michigan (Hancock and Detroit areas)

2) East coast USA: Maine and Connecticut

3) West coast USA: Seattle in Washington

4) Thunder Bay, Ontario in Canada

If you have any clues about these two relatives of mine, please let me know. Also if you have done your own genealogy research about the Romppainen family there in the USA, please let me know. It would really great to find out if there are any relatives of mine living in USA today.  You can send me an e-mail.
