The first Finnish settlers came to Paltamo in 1552
when the Swedish King
Gustaf
Wasa decided to conquer this wilderness from Novgorod.
There is a
stone monument for these settlers on the top of Kiehimänvaara hill.

Kivesvaara
hill (295 m above sea level) is one of the highest places in Paltamo.
There used
to be a ski resort decade ago. Nowadays we can only enjoy these fine sceneries
up on the high hill.
You can
see Lake Kivesjärvi on this photograph. The roots of the Finnish writer Artturi
Leinonen comes from Kivesjärvi area.

The name
“Paltamo” comes from the bank (“palte” in Finnish) by Lake Oulujärvi.
The second
and third church of Paltamo were built on this bank. In 1626 this bank slide
down to the lake.
The old
cemetery was also damanged and local people found human skulls and bones from
the lake.

The fourth
church of Paltamo is situated in Paltaniemi close to Kajaani.
The first church (1559) was burned by the Karelians
in the late 1500’s.
The second church (1599) was destroyed during a
heavy earthquake.
The third church (1664) was burned by the
Russians in 1716.
This fourth church
(1726) of Paltamo was built after the Great Wrath in Paltaniemi.
The roof
is full of paintings made by Emanuel Granberg in 1778-1781.
Best
preserved on its original appearance is “The Last Judgement” above the main
door.
Part of
the latter has been covered later because it caused too general shocks
especially among women.

The Lutheran Church in Paltamo is The
Greek Orthodox Church in Paltamo.
the fifth church in the history of Paltamo. There
is a small Greek Orthodox community in this area.
This church was built in 1946 just after the WW2. They are mainly
refugees from the Karelia which was lost
The older churches are situated in Paltaniemi cape
near Kajaani. during the WW2 to
the Soviet Union.

Mieslahti (Man’s Bay in English) is 9 kms long and 2
kms wide bay Lake
Oulujärvi is the fourth largest lake in Finland.
in the eastern Lake Oulujärvi. Kainuun
opisto, a christian institute During
wintertime there is the northern darkness.
for adults was established here in 1911. On the
opposite side of The sunrise is at
10 am and the sunset at 2 pm local time.
Mieslahti there is Saviranta.

After the WW2 this hall was donated to the
municipality of Paltamo because the Civil Guard was suspended by the Moscow
peace treaty.

Paltamo center in August
2005 looked like this. The highway between Kajaani and Rovaniemi goes through Paltamo.

Left: The poet Eino Leino, originally
Armas Einar Lönnbohm was born in Paltamo in 1878. He
was a
great Finnish poet and novelist, inspired by Finnish nature and cultural
inheritance.
His major
work Helkavirsiä "Whit songs", (1903-1916), was based on the
Kalevala.
The statue
of Eino Leino can be found from the hearth of Paltamo center.

Kiehimänjoki flows through Paltamo.
Kiehimä
is the name of the center of Paltamo municipality.
There
is a bridge over the river in Paltamo.
