Suomussalmen vanha kirkko tuhoutui talvisodassa. Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen rakennettiin uusi kirkko.
Noin 2/3 kirkon rakennuskustannuksista katettiin Amerikasta saaduilla varoilla.
